Reaching out internationally
El Hogar, Tegulcigalpa, Honduras
For many years, Saint Luke's has participated in mission trips to El Hogar de Amor y Esperanza (The Home of Love & Hope), located in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The mission of El Hogar is to provide a loving home and education in a Christian environment for abandoned, orphaned and hopelessly poor children, enabling them to fulfill their ultimate potential as productive human beings in Honduras. Here, approximately 100 little children live in a family environment through sixth grade. Upon graduation from sixth grade, children can choose to continue studying at El Hogar at our high school locations: The Episcopal Agricultural School and Farm or St. Mary's Technical Institute. In February 2007, El Hogar added a program for young girls.

There are an estimated 216 million cases of malaria each year, resulting in nearly one million deaths. The majority of these deaths are children younger than five years old. Since 2006, NetsforLife® has distributed over 8.5 million nets as part of its campaign to fight malaria resulting in less sickness, fewer deaths and stronger communities. Combined with the community education and net monitoring work of nearly 74,000 trained Malaria Control Agents, these nets have saved the lives of over 100,000 children under five and reduced the overall malaria-related death rate by 45% in communities where NetsforLife® is active. You can learn more about the NetsforLife® Inspiration Fund, or ask Deacon Tommy Rhoads(tommy [at] estlukes [dot] org).
